Yes, I am aware there was a negative comment about the format of last week’s post. However, it is what works at the present time. So, I hope you’ll bear with me, while I try to work the bugs out.
This week, on MasterChef:
First comes Monday, via Tweet-cap!
And now, for Tuesday:
The contestants find themselves in the MasterChef kitchen, where they are to face yet another
CHOPPED! Mystery Box Challenge. They lift up the boxes to find: a T-bone steak, an assortment of fresh fruit and veg, and some additional ingredients. $15.00 worth of ingredients in total, from Wal-Mart, the Official Grocer for MasterChef! Their task: take these ingredients and make a dish that any of the judges could sell in their restaurants for upwards of $40.00. Cowboy Mike is happy to see the steak. Frank has decided to take on the Challenge, and step out of his Italian comfort zone. Felix decides to make a roulade, causing Chef to question her sanity judgement. Becky decides to try something totally different, and puts the steak aside, so she can concentrate on making a dessert. The judges circulate through the kitchen during the cooking period, observing, tasting, and instilling fear into the hearts asking questions of the contestants.
After the cooking is done, the top three are summoned to the front for tasting. First up is Frank, whose willingness to leave his Italian wheelhouse earns him kudos, reaffirming his place as a contender. Next up: Tanya, whose
soft heart for little puppies and sociopathic colleagues first trip as a judges’ favorite was as much a surprise to her as it was to the others. The last one up is Becky! Stacey is not amused by this, not in the least. Besides, she didn’t use the steak, but made a dessert!?
The judges taste, the judges confer, the judges judge, the judges announce the name of the winner: Tanya! Surprised Tanya is surprised! She also has All The Power, as she heads into the pantry, where she learns the theme of the Elimination Test: tiramisu, trifle, and strawberry shortcake, a.k.a. the favorite desserts of the
producers judges. She finds out that the worst example of each dessert will earn its contestant a trip to the Bottom Three, from which one contestant will be eliminated. Then, she discovers her Significant Advantages: (1) she does not have to cook during the Elimination Test, and so is safe from elimination, and (2) she gets to determine which of her colleagues will cook which dessert. Will she try to pull a Ryan and throw her competition under the bus?
After the contestants hear what lies before them, they head into the pantry to discover the answer to the question, “What Hath Tanya Wrought?”:
- On Team Trifle: Josh, Becky, Monti, and Stacy.
- Team Strawberry Shortcake consists of: Christine, Mike, Tali, and Scott.
- Which leaves Frank, David, Felix, and Anna for Team Tiramisu.
As before, the judges circulate through the kitchen, asking questions and generally terrifying the contestants. Judge Joe questions David’s cream filling. Monti was unaware that trifle has a “sponge” (cake) on the bottom. Becky feels overwhelmed by the number of ingredients. Cowboy Mike feels he needs to amp up his shortcake, while Frank is comfortable with his ability to execute a proper tiramisu. Finally, the cooking is done, and each contestant brings their dish up for Tasting and Criticism.
First up is Team Tiramisu. Frank and Anna impress the judges: David and Felix do not. Chef: it is Felix’s “worst performance to date”. Crying Felix cries. And cries. And cries some more.
Following them is Team Trifle. Monti earns kudos for her execution of the British version, while Stacey gets props for her choice to do an Italian version. Josh brings up something that tastes like a “banana split” according to the judges, while Becky’s trifle, while beautiful, tastes so bad that Chef tells her Tanya may have succeeded in securing her elimination.
Last, but not least: Team Strawberry Shortcake. For such a simple dessert, there are a lot of mis-fires. First up is Cowboy Mike, whose dish looks to the judges like he “shot his dessert and dragged it back to the plate.” Christine decided to include blackberries and raspberries, to the point that the judges couldn’t taste the strawberries. Tali, who decided to perform a chemistry experiment on his dessert, actually earned some praise for concentrating the flavors. And Scott, poor Scott, he knocked Mike out of the bottom with his overly-kneaded dough.
After all the dishes were tasted, the judges confer, the judges judge, and the judges announce that the best dish belongs to Stacey (who wins the Elimination Test.)
On the bottom, then, we have: Scott, Felix, and Becky. Becky is sent back first, leaving Scott and Felix to face the music. Chef tells Felix that “it is time to say good-bye… to Scott, who is going home.”
And Felix cries some more.
Next week, on MasterChef: the contestants head to the beach, where they face their next Team Challenge – one involving food trucks! Someone tries to serve RAWR BURGERS, giving Chef the opportunity to say words like ****, ****, and especially ********! And then, some contestants face the Dreaded Pressure Test! And finally, another one
bites the dustgoes home! Who will it be? Tune in next week, and find out!
MasterChef airs at 8PM Central Time on Mondays and Tuesday, on FOX.
