Day 10 of my Photo-a-Day self-assignment:
There once was a purveyor of fine motor fuels who came up with a bright idea to “solve” the problem of Very Bad People tampering with their fuel dispensing units and adding some circuitry which would allow them to steal peoples’ credit card information: how about Let’s Put a Piece of Tamper-Evident Security Tape Across the Access Door to the Card Reader? And, let’s tell people to Report It when they See that the Tape has been Disturbed!
And so, they deployed this solution to various service stations, and then I noticed something: more often than not, The Tape It Has Been Disturbed! Also, The Attendants Get Vewy, Vewy Cwanky When You Tell Them About It!
Here’s my guess: there are times when one might have a legitimate need to open that access door. Say, for example, when the attendant has to replenish the roll of paper that prints the receipts! And if, maybe, they don’t have fresh tape strips to replace the ones they have just “tampered with”, what are they to do?
Looking at the photos, I think we know what the answer is.
#SecurityFAIL
(Note: This is part of a self-assignment I am trying, challenging myself to take – and post – at least one picture per day, each day, during the month of September. So, check back, and see what else I come up with!)
