Last week, I showed a photo of my Christmas (and birthday – and anniversary) present for this year (and probably the next 3) – a new power wheelchair. It has truly proven a blessing: after just a few days, I have already noticed that not only am I able to get around, but I am no longer complete exhausted from even the most trivial exertion, and I am even able to enjoy taking part in evening activities with the family (I had been falling into bed, hardly able to breathe, and laying there until time to go to sleep.)
Also, did I mention I am able to get around?
While I haven’t hit the zoo or the museums yet (baby steps, folks…), I have been exploring the area around home – the apartment complex where I live. There is plenty of stuff to see, and I am getting good practice maneuvering this device around – while being close enough to get a push home in case something goes wrong.
Here are some photos from my most recent ‘outing’, undertaken this past weekend:
Last but not least: I took the elevator to the top of the parking garage, where I got the following photo of the downtown skyline (you can see my shadow on the right):
After which, I rolled back down the garage, until I came across the speed bumps, at which time I made for the nearest door. Because speed bumps and wheelchairs don’t mix.
Really, I am still astonished at how liberating this device is for me. I had totally forgotten what it was like to just go out and do stuff. And I sure hope this ability to venture farther afield will be reflected in my future WW posts.
Here’s wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving, with lots of food, fun, and fellowship. And, have a Happy WW!
